"Tile & Stone: The Gritty Truth"
CEU Presented by Jim Caron
Attention Architects, Interior Designers & Landcape Architects!
The Manuel Leon Ponce Seminars invite you to join them for this continuing education class, presented by Jim Caron:
"Tile & Stone: The Gritty Truth"
This seminar uses "real world situations" to break down the major design items of all types of tiles and stones and how to properly specify, install and maintain each. Case studies are used to illustrate the most common types of failures that occur and how to prevent them. We explore how tile and stone classification (based on their physical characteristics and factors such as slip and abrasion resistance, surface hardness and foot traffic ratings) affects end-users` health, safety and welfare at large while also addressing accessibility and sustainability issues. We then discuss how to properly select the stone/tile and installation system best suited for each application. We also look at the installation phase during which surface preparation, crack isolation, water-proofing and sound isolation all play a critical role in ensuring the success of your design. Finally, we answer questions relating to types of sealers and cleaners to use for each stone type to guarantee the success and longevity of your tile and stone projects.
Presented by Jim Caron. Since 1983, Jim has been working as an architectural specifications specialist for various manufacturers in the tile and stone industry and assists the design community from specification to installation on countless Tile and Stone projects.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
• Discuss how to select the best tile and/or stone installation for particular projects and demonstrate how to properly specify, install and maintain these.
• Investigate common types of tile and stone failures and how to avoid them.
• Identify tile and stone classifications based on individual physical characteristics such as slip resistance and surface hardness and how this relates to health, safety and welfare for the end user.
• Analyze the installation phase to learn about the critical role surface preparation, crack isolation, water-proofing and sound isolation all play in the end result of your design.
• Review the new 2008 ANSI standards for specifications for Ceramic Tile.
• Discuss emerging green trends in the world of tile and stone and where to access the various tile and stone products to assist potential contribution to the green building rating systems.

It includes a brief history of accessibility codes and outlines the differences of the three codes as well as the similarities of the three codes. For designers working on government projects and out of state projects, this is a clarification of the differences.
